My 80+ year old mother is in the middle stages of AD, and has gone from sleeping all the time to being pretty much awake during the day. However, when she is awake, she is constantly asking members of the family to let the vicar into the apartment (my mother is very religious). These requests – sometimes bordering on the hysterical – could last for hours during the day. How does a caretaker deal with delusionary behavior?

It’s hard to give advice sometimes as not every approach will work, and I don’t know your whole situation. However, in my experience one approach is to humor the patient and enter into their world. You might try distracting her a little by telling her the vicar “will be coming later”. I can’t tell what you have already tried in this situation but I will say that arguing with her is not going to work. Is she under a doctor’s care?
